TCU UPDATE

So the Star-Telegram is reporting that as many as four or five true freshmen are going to be playing for TCU this fall. Two of those guys are offensive linemen.

Marshall Newhouse is a 6-3 317lb tackle that has been running with the first team offense, opposite Taylor. He was listed as a "5.2 2*" or the lowest rating a 2* can get according to Rivals.

The other TRFR OL is Marcus Cannon, (6-4 287). He'll be backing up at guard, next to Newhouse.

In other words, if this works out, then there will definitely be times when one side of TCUs line will be made up of true freshmen playing in their first college game. Wow.

And I thought TCU had OL problems before I read this.

By the way, this move is basically being made because the starter (Sisk 6-6 276) is out with a "minor injury". Nobody seems to know what that injury is. Gary Patterson called Newhouse a "lock for second team", but also said he was pushing into the first group.

Can there be any way that this is a good sign? I liken it to the similar happenings in TCUs secondary where the experienced players were knocked down to 2nd team to make way for the TRFR. If both these things happen, TCU will have one side of its line manned by true freshmen and both CBs will be true freshmen.

Patterson is also talking about playing two true freshmen along the DL and one at WR.

Comments:
The name newhouse rings a bell. But its intersting that they are willing to play so many young guys. How good is the Baylor front 7 or is it 6?

TCU played 2 true freshman on the defensive line in the opener against Oklahoma last year and we did fine. ( Vess and Jones ) I realize that both Baylor and TCU think they will win but from a Frog Fans perspective we have been hearing that our talent isn't good enough to compete with a Big 12 team forever and it gets frustrating.

We don't get credit for beating Oklahoma from Baylor fans because it was the first game of the year and apparently we should have beaten Iowa State much worse.

I have alot of respect for Baylor and truly think they are an up and coming team. The Bears could have EASILY been in a bowl game last year and they are definitley not the Baylor of old. Beating you guys will be tough. In regards to talent level.....TCU has had higher rated classes in comparison to Baylor four out of the last four years according to Rivals. Just because you are in the Big 12 doesn't make you more talented.

Oh and just for your analysis. In regards to our linebackers, Schlenger didn't end up getting a medical redshirt so he is out of eligibility. Also Hawthorne will start in front of Henson but they will rotate alot. In regards to corners....Priest saw action as a true freshman and Patterson thinks they are as talented as he has ever had at the position. It's easy to sit back and say that Sanders hasn't played since 4A High School but you have never seen him play. It would be like me commenting on a Baylor kid that I know nothing about and saying we will do really well against him because he doesn't have much experience. It doesn't always work that way.

Anyways...best of luck and I like your site. I'll be back after the game win or lose.

Michael,

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I really appreciate it.

Here's the thing: I see a huge difference between "playing" true freshmen and true freshmen making an impact. But if you are going to play true freshmen, let it be on the defensive line. That's much less risky than at OL. At DL, if he screws up, then LBs and safeties clean it up. At OL, if he screws up, you could lose your QB. One play, that's all it takes and Ballard is flattened. Then he gets happy feet...

And I realize that Vess and Jones played against OU, but what did they do? Jones had one solo tackle and one assist on a tackle, Vess didn't have anything. Now you can say that they took up space and all that, but it's not like they came out and blew OU away.

Last year your talent was definitely good enough to compete with the Big XII. But this year you have so many losses (so many losses), that it makes it a bigger stretch. Playing two true freshmen on the offensive line, especially when they aren't huge difference makers is a huge risk. Especially against a team that blitzes as much as we do and from as many different places.

You don't get credit for beating OU as being this huge thing. TCU fans fail to remember that we took OU to 2 overtimes in Norman, with Rhett Bomar at QB with experience. You got Paul Thompson, who's not a QB, and then Rhett Bomars first action in a college game. With an inexperienced OL. By the time we faced them, Bomar had thrown for 200+ yards in 3 straight (I think) games and was hitting his stride.

As for recruiting, just because you're highly rated doesn't make you talented, either. We have a ton of "2*" recruits that All-Big XII performers:

CJ Wilson
Braelon Davis
Dominique Zeigler
Will Blaylock
Mo Lane (just graduated)

Note: these aren't just talented 2*s, these are 2*s that received post-season awards for being among the best in the Big XII. And there will be more this year when Whitaker, Baker, Jones, and Crawford break out.

One thing, would you like to write up a rebuttle to my two preview posts? I'll post them on the blog here as "An Opponents View" to give you the chance to clarify some mistakes or assumptions I've made. I would retain editing privileges, of course, but if I make any changes, I'll run them by you before publishing.

What do you say?

Sure I'll write rebuttles for you. I'm not an expert by any means but probably know enough to make it interesting. I'll do it sometime Monday. Thanks.
