Baylor loses to Oklahoma 37-30 (2OT)

Well, Bear fans, it was a tough one and I'll admit that I'm just now getting over this loss. It has sent my feelings about Shawn Bell into a fury and it's really hard for me to settle down when people get me involved in a converation about it. I had just forgiven him for his pathetic game when he FINALLY hit a wide open receiver that had room to run after the catch (Zeigler on the touchdown) when overtime comes around.

But two overtime periods later, the hate was back and it was REAL this time.

Bell is the guy you want on your bench in case your starter goes down. He's not going to lose the game for you, and you have to gameplan to make use of his limited abilities. The problem is that, as a starter it is too easy to gameplan against his abilities.

Look at the A&M game. He comes in as a relative unknown and plays mistake free ball. The defense steps up and he makes a few plays and we win. The next week, he complete 9 of 21 passes for less than 100 yards.

I'm hoping and praying that Parks makes it on the field a substantial amount of time against our last four opponents. He needs the experience in games to build upon his natural abilities.
But back to the OU game...

The defense and special teams played incredibly well (well the defense had a really bad 2nd quarter, but you try staying on the field for 20 minutes and see how well you hold up). They played well enough for us to win this in regulation, and really we could have won it easily.
But nothing comes easy with our offense. And it's a shame, really. Did you see some of the catches Zeigler and Shelton were making? Incredible. I can't imagine how good these guys could be with a great QB, or really even an average Big XII quarterback.

Zeigler and Shelton made Bell look like he half-way belonged on the field. They made catch after catch that I thought would be impossible to make. The way they played, and they way that Mosley ran, this team very easily could have won.

But penalties and the fact that OU must never get called for holding, blunted our ability to get timely stops, and sacks and overthrows destroyed our ability to make noise on offense.
In the end, this game goes in the bag with A&M and Nebraska. The bag can be labeled: Games That Would Have Been Won By a Real Big XII Quarterback.

I'm sorry I harp so much on Bell, but it sucks that with a quarterback like Joel Klatt, this team is undefeated and ranked in the top 20. Instead, we're 4-3 with four games to go.

Can we still make a bowl game? Yes. Will it be easy? No. Oklahoma State is a gimme, but TTEch, UT and Mizzou are tough teams. I think we have a decet shot at Tech, no chance against Texas and a decent shot against Mizzou.

If Parks comes in and plays well, our chances improve dramatically in all our games, including Texas. But with this offense... I just can't see it happening.

Baylor Football is enjoying the Guy Morriss Era. Here at the Baylor Football Fan Blog, I will try to keep you up to date (sorta) on the goings on of Baylor football and my thoughts as well.
