Merrill Back... Or is he?

Robert Merrill returned to the practice field after sitting out with a back injury. Here's a clip from the article:

It could be a long road to being ready for the season opener, though. Merrill, TCU's leading rusher the past three seasons, is behind with his conditioning and hasn't had much contact to test the injury.

So, basically, he has a week and a half to get used to the pounding and get his conditioning up. Right, so don't count on Merrill being much of a threat for the Baylor game. Check.

There's also this note in the article:

Lonta Hobbs, the Frogs' other senior running back, did not practice as a precaution with a minor ankle injury and is expected to return soon.
Hobbs is a talented runner and also a pretty tough guy. I don't expect this to have too much of an impact on his status for the Baylor game, but it's some to take note of.

Gary Patterson has closed practices until the Baylor game. I guess he's afraid that something really important is going to slip out about the offense and defense he's been running since he took over years ago. This made me think of something.

Ever since Guy Morriss talked about Patterson not being able to keep his mouth shut, Patterson has shut up. Now he's closed practice to outsiders. I have to believe that Patterson is scared to death of this matchup. He's doing everything he can to talk Baylor up to be a tough team in his latest interviews. He knows his corners are young and untested and that they are going to be thrown into the fire against All-Big XII caliber receivers in a pass heavy offense. He knows they are going to be on an island and giving up 4-5 inches of height and 20-40 pounds of weight.

He knows his offensive line is young, and getting younger with the injuries that have struck lately. With the possibility of starting two true freshmen, he knows that moving the ball is going to be much more difficult that the fans at TCU are willing to believe.

And that's just it. The TCU fans EXPECT to blow Baylor out. On one prediction thread on KillerFrogs.com, they had an average prediction of 30-17. On another it was 30-12. They are expecting to come down to Waco and dominate Baylor.

What if it doesn't happen?

Think about it. What if TCU starts the year 2-2 with losses to Baylor and Tech? What happens to the aura of TCU then? Where do their fans go then?

Patterson isn't talking, but he's thinking. Thinking about all the possibilities that can come from this game. More bad than good. TCU fans should start getting their excuses ready, too.

Comments:
I dont think TCU fans expect a blowout. Maybe some here on the net, but that is not a proper sample. Certainly not one that deserves extroploation. Most fans I talk to think it will be about a touchdown or a field goal difference. From your comments, it seems like you are giddy over the injuries. Why do you have that kind of attitude? Would you rather defeat a wounded opponent or an opponent that is full strength?

When it comes down to it, I don't care how we win. Would I rather do it full-force, sure? But the reality is that injuries play into the game of football. You could say that the TCU coaches should have been more careful with how they used their players. I don't know.

I'm not "giddy" over the injuries, I just think it's funny that Patterson and the internet frogs get so bent out of shape that someone might know something about the injuries.

The injuries have an impact on a Baylor game, and it is this blogs purpose to help inform Baylor fans about what might affect Baylor and its football team.

It's standard protocol for Patterson to close practice at this point before the first game of the season. He did the same thing at this point last year before TCU played Oklahoma.

As far as injuries are concerned...Gary has ALWAYS been a Nazi about releasing that information. Obviously he doesn't want the competition to find out and game plan accordingly. I think it's silly but I can't argue with the man's success.

As for starting two true freshman..who are you referencing? Newhouse is going to backup Sisk who has been practicing with the First Team for 4 days now after coming back from a minor injury. Who is the other you were thinking of?

Is it me or are these days crawling by? Sept. 3rd can't get here quick enough.

The last I heard was that Newhouse was working almost exclusively with the first team. Obviously I haven't heard anything since practice has been closed.

I didn't get a name of the other guy. One of my friends is a team tutor and works with one of the OL. He fills me in because he knows I'm a big football fan. He just told me that there were likely to be 2 true freshmen starting on the oline.

Granted, he could have been talking about some point during the season and not the Baylor game.

I know that Patterson is kinda paranoid. I just like poking fun at him. I think he's a funny guy. I love watching him get all worked up on the sideline, and sweat all over the place. I can see why he sparks such loyalty among the fanbase, though.

And yes, Sept. 3rd is closer than ever, but the days seem to get longer and longer and longer.

I don't think any honest TCU fans EVER expect a blow out. I'm personally surprised with every win, usually because our secondary looks like the local middle school..except when they are grabbing 4 interceptions/game.

As far as where "we" go if we lose...we go no where. TCU students are too apathetic to get that worked up over anything. We leave that to you baylor fans and your undying love of tennis and women's basketball.

I have no idea what your second paragraph means, but any school that wins a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in a sport is going to be supportive of those sports.

Of course, we also have our baseball team going to Omaha or the Super Regionals quite often. We have our softball team in the NCAA Tourney. We have our 4x400m and 400m dominance.

And we are about to add football and basketball back into the mix.

So there's a lot to be excited about around Baylor sports.

I almost forgot that TCU won the men's 400m relay in 1986, 87, 89, 91, 95, 98, and 2001. Baylor has never won it. Real dominant.

You're ignorance earned you your own blog entry. Congratulations!
